Camp Description:
The Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson, KS, is one of the nation's premier space training programs. Designed by the Cosmosphere's space science educators, this six-day program simulates astronaut training through teamwork, problem solving and training in state-of-the-art simulators: Space Shuttle Falcon, 5G centrifuge, mission control, multi-axis trainer, manned maneuvering unit, advanced flight simulator, lunar rover, robotics challenge, and stress simulator. Students attend briefings on spaceflight, astronaut requirements, the International Space Station, all aspects of the shuttle and NASA's unmanned probes. The students build and launch rockets, study astronomy using telescopes and the Cosmosphere's planetarium, attend IMAX films and take advantage of the Hall of Space Museum, which houses one of the most comprehensive collections of American and Russian space artifacts in the world, including the actual Apollo 13 command module "Odyssey."
