Camp Description:
It's hard to for any of us to imagine the eruption of emotions that accompany life as a burn survivor. The adjustment and acceptance from others can be even more difficult for a child. That's why the People's Burn Foundation founded Brave Hearts' Camp. Brave Hearts' Camp was the first burn camp for children in the state of Indiana. The physical deformities from burn or fire injuries, no matter how well hidden, can fracture self-esteem, spark depression and turn the joyous noise of youth into frightening silence. Brave Hearts' Camp offers young burn survivors reprieve ~ a chance to be normal. The camp is one of the Foundation's primary outreach programs for youth 5-18 yeras old who have been hospitalized for severe burn injuries. During the week-long program, cousnelors, professional firefighters, medical personnel, adult burn survivors and Foundation volunteers work with children on self-esteem issues through a variety of activities. It is an environment of acceptance, compassion and fun. The prevailing attitude and mission of Brave Hearts' Camp is to help children build the confidence and inner strength necessary to live fulfilling lives after a burn injury. Campers participate in water activities, archery, horseback riding, challenge courses, canoeing, nature trails, arts and crafts, a "Day of Beauty" for the girls, and many other events. Brave Hearts' Camp has been widely recognized as a unique and necessary component of burn survivor services. The camp is free to any burn survivor and it's not necessary to be a resident of the State of Indiana to attend. PBF is committed to keeping camper numers low, thereby maintaining th critical one-on-one attention campers currently receive. Camper applications are available online and will be accepted through July 15, 2004.
