Camp Description:
The Outdoor Youth Development Program (Alternative School)serves students ages 11-16 who have been expelled from the surround school districts (Summerton and Manning). The school is run by 1 Assistant Director, 1 Coordinator, 6 instructors, and 1 teacher. The maximum number of students allowed is 36. The school is academically and experientially based; the teacher controls the academic section with instructors assisting in tutoring the students. The experiential part is controlled by the Coordinator and 6 instructors. The experiential section includes: personal development, service learning, life skills, current events, history, science, sports, kayaking, canoeing, camping, swimming, horseback riding, high ropes courses, climbing walls, teams courses, backpacking, and outdoor trips. A majority of the instructors time is spent outdoors. Other major duties include dealing with discipline problems and applying consequences for inappropriate behavior. The school runs from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM Mondays through Wednesdays; Thursdays are residential (overnights) and school lets out Friday at 2:00 PM.
