Camp Description:
Special Days Camp is open to any child who currently has cancer or leukemia, or has had it in the past. Special Days Camp gives these youngsters a chance to be "just kids" and experience the fun of traditional summer camp with one vital addition: the medical care and treatment they require from oncology physicians and nurses. The health and well-being of the campers are our primary concern. The medical staff administers routine chemotherapy and other medications, take blood counts, care for catheters, handle all necessary medical treatments and situations. The medical staff resides at camp and is available 24 hours a day. The campers say that at Special Days they "feel free" and can "escape" from their worries and "be themselves." For one week in the summer, they can learn about others from different backgrounds, make good friends, try new things, and gain a sense of independence and self-reliance. Surrounded by others with similar conditions and experiences, they "don't feel different." Partners Camp is available for the brothers and sisters of children with cancer. The only program of its kind in Michigan, Partners Camp gives siblings their own week of carefree and action-packed summer camp, in the company of fellow campers who share and understand their unique experiences with cancer.
