Camp Description:
Who We Are: Camp Big Silver is owned and operated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a safe, supportive environment for kids-- they're the "clubs that beat the street." With a special interest in providing a positive place for children from disadvantaged circumstances, the Clubs serve a multi-ethnic population of children largely from the inner-city. We are a co-ed camp, and all our campers are members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo.

Our Mission: At Camp Big Silver, we provide a safe, quality outdoor education and recreation program for children ages 7-13 who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Through the support of the United Way and community minded individuals, our campers' fees are kept extremely low so that all children, regardless of their family's income, can enjoy a week at camp. The Basics: Camp Big Silver is a co-ed, residential (i.e. "sleepaway") camp, so all of our program staff lives on camp with the kids. Eight camper sessions serve up to 84 campers a week. Campers are divided by age into 12 cabins (7 boy cabins and 5 girl cabins) with a Cabin Counselor in charge of each.

Our Program: We run a very traditional summer camp program. On the first day, campers can choose four "formal" activities from any of our program areas:

Waterfront-- this is the most popular area at camp! Campers of all levels can participate in activities such as canoeing, fishing, and open waterfront. There are swim lessons for beginning and intermediate swimmers, while advanced swimmers can go snorkeling, sailing, or take diving lessons.

Nature-- what would camp be without spending some time in the woods? With an emphasis on environmental education, in the nature program campers can take a nature class, go hiking, and our older campers can learn camping skills.

Creative Arts-- campers can express themselves in a variety of ways-- creating nature crafts, acting in a drama class (where they produce a skit for the end-of-the-week campfire), or becoming reporters for our weekly camp newspaper.

Sports/Marksmanship-- a perennial favorite, campers can learn safety and test their skills at the archery or air riflery ranges, or on the "Silver Hills" Frisbee golf course, as well as many other popular sports or CBS originals.

In addition to our program activities, campers and staff participate in lots of free swims, songs, skits, campfires, games, kickball, relays, polar bear swims, and general all-around silliness!

Our Philosophy: At Camp Big Silver, we believe that a residential camping experience can provide children with a unique opportunity to learn about the outdoors, community living, and working together. Our staff provide positive role models for our campers and guide them in learning about themselves and others. Above all, we strive to create a safe, fun, and dynamic environment where campers and staff make wonderful memories that last a lifetime!
