Camp Description:
Founded in 1959, Camp Walden has been providing children with unforgettable summers for decades. We offer a traditional, well-rounded camping experience that emphasizes having fun, gaining new skills and learning a little more about yourself! Located in beautiful Northern Michigan, Walden boasts more than 50 different instructional activities for campers to choose from, a mature and dedicated staff, and a pristine setting in which kids truly thrive. All-camp and group programs promote spirit, creativity and tradition.
Walden’s shoreline on Long Lake is a summer playground for swimmers, canoeists, kayakers, windsurfers, sailors, waterskiers, wakeboarders and tubers. On our two athletic fields, campers receive instruction in softball, archery, volleyball, soccer, golf, basketball (the court is lit for nighttime play), lacrosse and tennis (on eight courts). Fencing, gymnastics, martial arts and fitness classes round out the sports offerings. We offer league play in some sports, too.
Between 15 and 20 camp horses reside at the Walden stables during the summer. Campers learn English-saddle techniques in four school rings and on trail rides. Grooming, stable management, safety and an appreciation of all animals broadens the program. Our arts-and-crafts building houses more than a dozen different offerings from pottery to lapidary to model-making. In the area of media, Walden offers photography and videography, radio (our own station broadcasts 24 hours a day!), and the daily camp newspaper, The Walden Pond--a must-read at breakfast. Dance, music and drama classes (and our all-camp talent show “Walden Under the Stars”) give kids ample opportunity to participate in the performing arts.
Camp’s location allows us to take full advantage of all that Northern Michigan has to offer in the way of hiking, backpacking and mountain biking. Campers take day and overnight excursions to spots such as Picture Rocks, Mackinac Island, Tahquemenon Falls, Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes and the Jordan River Valley. Our nature program encourages exploration of camp’s pristine environment, from the old-growth forests to the lagoons.
The vast majority of Walden’s loyal and talented administrative staff work as professional teachers in the off-season, and counselors are hired both for their instructional abilities as well as their desire to work with children. A week-long staff orientation emphasizes attention to individual camper needs, proper supervision, safety procedures and creating a positive environment. We want kids to leave Walden at the end of their stay with more confidence, new friends and tons of great memories!
