Camp Description:
Children come away with a sparkle in their eyes that reflects both the satisfaction and fun of farm life. As Montessori teachers, the Barkers have designed the experience so that children have access to the farm's very essence. Without formal instruction on the subject, participants actually live the meaning of the agricultural revolution and come away knowing what makes civilization possible. Animal lovers do well as do children who are comfortable with mixed ages. The 42-acre farm is located in the neighborhood of the world's largest settlement of Amish people although the Barkers are not Amish themselves and the experience has no religious affiliation. The smaller, more comprehensible scale of life in this area is perfect. Things are just the right size. What children do on the farm makes a difference and each child benefits significantly from this purposefulness. The consistency yet variety in the experience brings children back year after year. Fun is basic to life on a farm but satisfaction is the lingering result. After a week children feel they have lived on the farm all their lives. Many references. Write.
