Camp Description:
The International Aerospace Academy is a division of the Aerospace Science and Technology Education Center (ASTEC). The Academy is Oklahoma's oldest space camp, now in its 14th year. Dr. Freda Deskin, an official NASA "Space Ambassador," and a finalist in the Teacher in Space program founded the academy. Dr. Deskin is recognized as an educational leader with expertise in curriculum and instruction. She has continued the dream of Christa McAuliffe and the Challenger crew by developing innovative programs and materials that use the themes of aerospace science and technology as a tool to help citizens succeed in the 1st century. Day Camps are offered for students ages 8-10 and 11-13. Residential camps are offered for students ages 11-13 and 14-18. Programs are presented in challenging, real-life scenarios and simulations. At the center of all ASTEC curriculum are the concepts of CONTENT, CHARACTER, COMPETENCY AND COMMUNITY skills. The Camp has a 50-70% return rate of IAA campers. The classes are taught by degreed instructors trained in the ASTEC Learning Model. Maximum enrollment for resident camps: 100 cadets and for day camps: 120 cadets.
