 Idyllwild Arts Summer Program

Since 1950, the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program has offered intensive workshops in dance, fashion design, film, music, theatre, visual arts, writing and Native American arts to students of all ages and abilities, including families. Our 205-acre campus is located at the 5,000’ level in the spectacular San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. This tranquil site, remote from urban distractions, affords students a serene and focused learning environment. Idyllwild is a relaxing 2.5 hour drive from Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego and is easily accessible from all airports in the Southern California region. For students arriving from out of the Southern California area, we offer round-trip airport transportation.

Students come to Idyllwild Arts to pursue their passion for the arts. Every summer, literally hundreds of students have their lives changed for the better by their participation in the program. Whether as a relative beginner or as an experienced practitioner, they receive stimulating and comprehensive instruction to help them in advancing their skills.

Students enroll in one course per session which becomes the primary focus of their participation in the program. In general, students can expect to be involved in course-related activities a minimum of six hours per day, six days per week. Individual course schedules vary according to the requirements of each discipline.

The faculty of more than 300 professional artist-teachers expects to work with students of all levels of ability and experience in a nurturing and non-competitive atmosphere that stresses strong educational and personal values along with outstanding achievement. Each summer, approximately1,700 students ages 5-95 participate in the program.

In 2011, students from 42 states and 19 different countries converged in Idyllwild for a summer-long celebration of the arts.

Courses are offered by age: Children’s Center (5-12); Junior Artists Center (11-13); Youth Arts Center (13-18); Adult Arts Center (19+). Most programs for young people are two weeks long, with a few one-week courses for children.

Family Camp, a week-long arts experience for the whole family, is one of the most popular programs we offer. By day, family members immerse themselves in more than 30 different arts choices, some for kids, some for adults and many for the entire family. Fun and family-oriented activities such as the staff talent show, campfire sing-alongs, pool parties and star hikes fill the evening hours. The week culminates with a family art exhibit and the ever-popular family talent show. Enrollment is limited to 35 families so it is important to enroll early to lock in a space for this most joyful of weeks.

As a cornerstone of our non-profit mission, the Summer Program is committed to providing financial aid to students who would otherwise not be able to participate. Each summer, approximately 500 students receive assistance from the school in the form of direct grants and discounts. For many of these students, two weeks studying the arts in the mountains changes their lives in the most profound ways.

The Summer Program is an invigorating time of intense activity and genuine creativity packed into an eight-week season that transforms lives and motivates participants to pursue their dreams. We hope that you can join us this summer in Idyllwild!
